Perhaps it is this approach to the book, that has been the source of much of the hurt that has been experienced. It is sad to hear that this book was taken as the ultimate guide to successful dating relationships and ultimately marriage. In some ways I feel that the book has been unfairly scapegoated for the failures and shortcomings of the whole purity culture. The film sparked a lot of discussion between us about societal and Christian influences with regards to dating and marriage and the role that sex plays in the whole scenario. It was interesting to hear more about the 'purity culture' in the late 90's that served as a cultural influence to the book. I thoroughly enjoyed the documentary which I watched with a couple of friends, married and single. I am reminded of Elijah in 1 Kings: we did no better than our fathers. We wrote some rules, but our rules created new problems. The moral here is very old: we saw a problem in the culture. The speakers came from different traditions or intellectual backgrounds (a secular columnist! a professor!)Ĥ. I appreciated the diversity represented in the interviews. Josh and Jessica did well by examining IKDG in light of the larger cultural influences that were present in 1999, as the story of the purity movement is bigger than IKDG.ģ. I am now fond of the CS Lewis quote: To love at all is to be vulnerable.Ģ. This is a minor source of heartbreak for me, which ironically is exactly what courtship was supposed to help me avoid. My first relationship failed, in part because we 'guarded our hearts' too intently. I was raised at Joshâ€™s church in MD, and thus I have been following this film with interest.
